Katie Lockhart Studio designs memorable, much-lauded interiors for prominent stores, restaurants and residences in New Zealand and world-wide.

Katie also creates editorials for international magazines and is the founder of Auckland-based Everyday Needs, a store and online purveyor of artisanal furniture and homewares sourced from New Zealand and around the world. The studio’s design work is unique for its understatement. It is far too humane to be called minimalist, but it never shouts for attention, leaving space for the imagination (in editorial shoots) or for people to feel supremely comfortable (in interiors). The common thread through all of the projects that Katie and her design team take on, as well as the curation of her store, is one of soulfulness. “For me, the most important thing is not one piece of important furniture in isolation but the overall feeling of a space” Katie says. “There is usually something gently surprising about the combination of our selections for a space, but they’re never loud. Most of all, I want the spaces that we work on – whether they are large or small – to feel grounded and intimate.”
